
Algoma Power’s Powerline Technicians are responsible for the construction and maintenance of power lines throughout our service area.
This apprenticeship program involves successful completion of Levels 1-4 of in-school training as well as proven on-the-job competency and required hours worked in the trade to be a certified Powerline Technician.
The knowledge and skills acquired within this department are beneficial to many other teams and departments throughout our organization!
Requirements
Participants in the Power Line Technician Apprenticeship Program must have and meet the following:- College graduate of a Powerline Technician program
- Valid Ontario G driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Physically able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions
- General knowledge of line materials, trade related practices/standards and operating rules and regulations is an asset
- Good communication (verbal and written) skills as well as the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, customers, and industry partners
- Must work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions from supervisor and peers
- Ability to think critically and analytically with strong problem solving and decision-making skills
- Unrelenting commitment and passion to safety, ethics, and continuous improvement
- Be subject to a criminal, financial, and educational background check

This includes protection and control duties as required including wiring, installing, and maintaining panels along with control equipment.
This apprenticeship program involves successful completion of Levels 1-3 of in-school training as well as proven on-the-job competency and required hours worked in the trade to be a certified Substation Electrician.

Requirements
Participants in the Substation Electrician Apprenticeship Program must have and meet the following:- Completed a three (3) year Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma from an accredited Ontario college. Registered with OACETT and achieved the C.E.T. designation (or working towards) within the Province of Ontario.
- Valid Ontario G driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Physically able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions
- Excellent computer skills with practical knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Good communication (verbal and written) skills as well as the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, customers, and industry partners
- Must work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions from supervisor and peers
- Ability to think critically and analytically with strong problem solving and decision-making skills

They work with electrical trades, maintain and program new electronic metering hardware and software, troubleshoot meter modem/communications equipment and telephone lines, and aid in meter changes and Customer Service assignments as required.

A Utility Arborist uses climbing techniques, climbing systems and mechanized equipment to work at heights in urban, rural and off-road locations. The ability to work with chainsaw, wood/branch chipper, brush saws and related arboriculture tool operations is required.
An apprenticeship training program consists of on-the-job and in-school training. Generally, the time-frame to become competent in the trade of Utility Arborist is 6,000 hours (approximately three years) consisting of 5,340 hours of on-the-job work experience and 660 hours of in-school training. This work will appeal to those individuals that enjoy physical work that is primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You will be required to work at heights, on ladders, in aerial devices and in trees.

Participants in the Utility Arborist Apprenticeship Program must have and meet the following:- Grade 12 or the equivalent including Grade 12 Mathematics (or equivalent) and Grade 12 English (or equivalent)

- Good computer skills with practical knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
